INGREDIENTS
- 1 glühwein kit
- 1 cup water
- 1 orange
- 1 bottle of wine (750ml) Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah/Shiraz, or Grenache
INSTRUCTIONS
- Using a vegetable peeler, remove the zest from a medium orange in wide strips, taking care to avoid the white pith; set aside.
- Heat 1 cup water in a large saucepan over medium heat until hot, but do not bring to a boil.
- Add glühwein kit and stir until sugar is fully dissolved.
- Lower heat to medium-low.
- Add the orange peel. You can add juice from the orange but it is optional.
- Reduce heat to a simmer.
- Add 1 bottle (750ml) of red wine. Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah/Shiraz, or Grenache work best.
- Simmer for 20 min. If you are not serving within 30 minutes, remove from heat and cover the pan and let sit until serving.
- When ready, pour into mug or heat-appropriate cup. Top with a splash of rum or amaretto.
If you bought a double bag, use 2 cups of water and 2 orange peels. You can save the hard spices and use again!
